The Republic of Humanity caste system

Time has codified the original meritocracy structure into a caste-based cultural system. At the time of its implementation, it was meant to help the First Exiles to establish a hierarchy of distribution for limited resources. A person who was a bad shot shouldn’t receive a rife, especially if his or her inclination is more towards medicine. At this moment in Humanity's evolution, the castes have limited fluidity; exceptional candidates can still move upward.

With the exception of the Maharatha, each subcaste is structured as the Republic is structured. The highest ranked and most Drengin Tercio will work with the Maharatha, with the most Drengin and highest ranked Teyma and Wei in support. The most Drengin Medics will tend the Maharatha; the most Drengin Technicians will repair their gear; the most Drengin Logistics, Construction, and Labor will ensure they have their equipment, the best constructed equipment and the best raw materials to make that equipment, respectively.

The Oniwabanshu Caste

Oniwabanshu oni-wabahn-shoo, noun

The administrative arm of the Republic and the Oniban. To become “Oniwabanshu” rank is to achieve the pinnacle of one’s career. Their rank structure, and the dreng that goes with it, imitates that of the caste structure in general, that is, Warrior > Scientist > Support and so on into the sub-castes. The Oniwabanshu controls where soldiers are placed and battle goals, the production chain, and logistics of the entire nation.

Warrior Caste

Currently the highest dreng of the Major Castes. They enjoy the best that the Republic has to offer in weapons, clothing, and quality of food.

Maharatha mah-har-ath-ah, noun

They are the sword arm of the Oniban, the elite fighting force within the Republic, and are loyal to the Oniban before all else. They are assigned the most challenging and critical of missions. The Maharatha are perhaps the most fluid of subcastes, as candidates are chosen from all castes, regardless of upbringing or heritage.

Tercio ter-shee-yo, noun

The workhorses of the Republic. They bear the brunt of any assault and wear heavy power armor. At this point in the history and life of the Republic, some genetic familial traits have appeared that favor placement into the Tercio caste — mainly size, strength, and stamina.

Teyma tay-mah, noun

This caste drives and pilots the war machines of the Republic. The navy, air force, cavalry, and artillery Alliance equivalents fall into this category. At the moment, the cavalry subcaste enjoy the most dreng. With the completion and launch of Humanity's first warship, the Tokugawa, the Teyma subcaste has been thrown into disarray as the Starfarer Teyma subcaste rises to prominence.

Wei way, noun

They act as occupation and cleanup forces after the Tercio and Teyma clear an operating zone. They guard and patrol the boarders and frontier settlements.

Civil Police  noun

The lowest subcaste provides civilian safety and performs small controlling operations inside Republic cities. They also investigate civilian crimes.

Scientist Caste

Second most in dreng, this Major Caste performs most of the “skilled labor” within the Republic. With the exception of the Medics, they don’t often see military action.

The doctors, combat medics, and surgeons of the Republic. Their own subhierarchy mirrors that of the Republic, with those who tend the Maharatha at highest dreng, and then everything filtering down from there.

The “hands-on” repairmen and women of the Republic. Like the Medics, their subhierarchy mirrors the Republic in general. The best tend to the Oniwabanshu’s needs, then the Maharathas’ equipment, and so on.

They are the designers, engineers, and researchers for all aspects of the Republic. They are the link between the Logistics, Construction, and Labor subcastes and the rest of the upper castes, making sure innovations and upgrades reach each caste in time.

Support Caste

The Support Caste builds, transports, harvests, and cleans everything within the Republic.

The Logistics sub-caste ensures that the finished goods (weapons, equipment, vehicles) are where they need to be, when they need to be there. They control the production lines from the Labor and Construction sub-castes.

Primarily factory and construction workers, the Construction caste builds the apartments and infrastructure of the Republic.

The Labor subcaste produces and refines the raw materials of the Republic. From mining, to tilling, to chopping, the Labor subcaste does it all.

The least Drengin of all major and subcastes. They collect the garbage, sweep the streets, and handle the refuse and recycling within the Republic’s cities.

Even with the widespread use of the Iron Womb, the Republic’s True-Born citizenry can’t keep up with the Republic’s demand for warm bodies of all castes; Variants, then, fill the needed manpower gap. They are treated as second-class citizens, are seen as a necessary evil, and a disposable resource. As such, they have no political representation and less respect.

Variants are not clones, though they are grown exclusively in Iron Wombs and are a combination of gametes from exceptional True-Born and Variant candidates. Variants are stronger, bigger and more intelligent than their average True-Born counterparts. The Republic, in an attempt to limit the Variants taking over the gene pool, have made them sterile, as well as segregating them in their own crèches, stifling their caste promotions, excluding them from the Oniwabanshu, and limiting their education only to the role that they are deemed suited.

Lacking the broader range of education that the True-Born Humans enjoy, all Variants take on a Mentor, an older Variant who will help them fill in their lacking knowledge and skills.

The lifespan of each Variant is limited — beyond that even of death during active combat. As another means of control, each Variant is instilled with an early-death gene that flips on at age fifty. Exceptional Variants can have their lives extended through gene therapy.

Their only means of reproduction is to become Drengin, wherein the Scientists will mix some of their genetic material into the next generation of Variants.

At this point in the history of the Republic, they have begun specializing the Variants further into their own subspecies. They have had success with the Pilot and Teyma sub-Variants, and limited success of the Esper line — a Psychic Variant.
